Pedagogy at PUC-Rio
The Pedagogy course at PUC-Rio is responsible for educating professionals committed to human development, guaranteeing political and social relevance to the profession. Based on this approach, this professional is able to perform various functions in the educational system, both in school and in non-school contexts such as educational work in businesses and museums, contributing to the promotion of the learning of children, adolescents and adults at different levels and in schools or other educational spaces.
Concerning the labor market, the Pedagogue who graduates from PUC-Rio will be able to work in schools as a teacher in early childhood education, in the initial grades of elementary school and in some primary teacher education institutions (special high school course), in addition to performing the functions of educational supervisor, pedagogical coordinator or supervisor and director. However, this professional's job market is not restricted to schools. In today's society, this professional has been requested, more and more frequently, by companies, non-governmental organizations, educational media (production of educational videos, games, teaching resources), museums, cultural centers, toy libraries, hospitals, research bodies, educational consultancies and government agencies related to education, because where there is educational practice, pedagogical action is necessary.
The Pedagogy course at PUC-Rio traditionally stands out for placing these professionals in the labor market with a solid theoretical-practical foundation and a contextualized view of the entire educational process. The curriculum of the Pedagogy course is intended to educate professionals capable of taking a critical and conscious stand in the face of contemporary challenges to Brazilian education, in dialogue with current research.
The course is organized in eight academic semesters and was a pioneer in presenting an integrated curricular structure. The theory-practice articulation is developed throughout the course and is consolidated through practicums carried out in different areas of education, in addition to the possibility of participating in educational projects on and off campus. Students also have the possibility of expanding their training experience through non-curricular practicums and internships in schools and non-formal educational spaces. In schools, students of the Pedagogy course can participate in the Education Initiation Programs (PIBID) and Pedagogical Internship, promoted by the Ministry of Education (MEC), which are developed with partner schools in the municipal system and under the supervision of teachers from the Department of Education.
It is noteworthy that the Pedagogy course at PUC-Rio is taught together with academic research, enabling the education of up-to-date and knowledgeable professionals. During the course, students may have the opportunity to be granted research mentoring scholarships and participate in research projects developed by graduate professors from the Department of Education.
